Sticky Post

Now that I'm no longer ashamed of my webpage, Paraka Productions please go there to see all of my works.

They should also all be up on AO3.

If you need to contact me for any reason (including questions about any of the many comms I run), my email is parakaproductions at gmail dot com.

Remix Policy
If you'd like to remix any of my fandom offerings (that includes anything I created on this journal), all the power to you. I don't have much fic but you're welcome to podfic it, write sequels or rewrite them entirely; whatever strikes your fancy.

Same goes with my vids, feel free to copy ideas or take clips if you need.

If I've podficed a story that you'd also like to podfic, don't let me hold you back (I don't actually think you need to ask first before repodding but if you were thinking about it, no need).

If you want to do anything with my works or fannish presence, go for it, you don't need to ask first (although I'd be totally interested in seeing what you make of it :).

Megaupload

Guys, megaupload has been shut down. D:

Yes, there was a lot of pirated files up there, but worse, there was also a lot of fannish works up there.

I've said this a couple different places and at different times, but if anyone wants a fannish home to host their fanworks (podfic, vids, art, whatever) I'm happy to share my webspace. I host things for a number of people already. And would be happy to host for others too.

Details )

I'm seriously offering this to any fan, you don't need to know me to take me up on the offer. :)

ETA: Because some people have asked, there is some statistics tracking available if you want to host with me. Here's an example of what the stats page looks like.
People are also free to use the space to make an actual webpage if they like (rather than just hosting files there). My default is to set people up with an FTP account but if you want something with My SQL or something we can talk. :)

ETA2: I'm actually out of town this weekend. I will have internet access to answer questions and/or set up accounts, it just might take me a bit before I can answer.

AI8 RPF Podfic: Untitled Kink Fic

Fic: Untitled Kink Fic by anonymous (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5&6, Part 7, Part 8)
Fandom: American Idol S8
Pairing: Kris/Adam
Length: 49:48
Links: MP3 (40 MBs) ||| M4B (49 MBs)

Summary: A series of D/s ficlets.

Notes:This is my 50th podfic! \o/ I actually recorded this and had all but the last part edited back in August, but it took me a while to get author permission and then I was busy with [community profile] pod_aware stuff... and it's only now that I managed to go back to it.

I'm sorry there aren't fic links to the last two parts. I recorded from a locked entry (which I won't link to since it might reveal the author and they asked to stay anonymous and it's locked anyways). I tried to find public links for the last two parts, I seriously just spent the past two hours searching through the 4676 comments on that post to see if the other parts were there and couldn't find it. /o\ If I'm able to find them later, I'll edit them in.

Because everyone is doing it...

Book meme!

Pick up the nearest book to you. Turn to page 45. The first sentence describes your sex life in 2012.

"It smelled like moss and oak and the damp dark spaces of the Wood beyond the meadow."

I'm just glad I was sitting on the side of the bed I was when I decided to do this, because if I was on the other, the closest book was a math textbook :S Although discussing exponents could have implied good things I guess?

Also, depending on my energy levels, I may be posting podfic meta soon.

#InformalTwitterPodficExchange

Letter to the person that made my #InformalTwitterPodficExchange present:

I am spending Christmas at my Nana's, and she doesn't even know how to turn a computer on, let alone have the internet, so I won't be able to properly squee and flail at you when podfics go live. Please know that this will kill me a little, as I'm sure whatever you made me will be perfect and amazing and will fill me with glee!

I can't wait till I have internet again to be able to listen. :D

Unpopular fannish opinion

So, I have an unpopular fannish opinion, and unlike the last one I had, I don't think I can keep this one private.

For those that don't already know, Adam Lambert was arrested last night... )

And with that, I'm gonna go back to podficcing.

ETA: Adam just tweeted "Violence is not to be taken lightly. Embarrassed by drunkenness. No punches thrown, no injuries and no charges. Media always exaggerates." So I'll take him at his word and assume the media did exaggerate what happened greatly. But I still stand by my comments and that I dislike the silencing/shaming of voices I saw occurring when the information we had said otherwise.

50th Podfic Coming Soon!

So according to my count, I currently have 48 podfics posts. I'm going to be posting one on Saturday (or rather [personal profile] cantarina and/or [livejournal.com profile] bessyboo will post a podfic of mine on Saturday, since it’s a part of the Informal Twitter Podfic Exchange they're running) but after that, the next one will be my 50th podfic, and I believe this is a momentous occasion! I want my 50th to be special, you should help me choose which one it'll be:

Livejournal to do away with subject line in comments

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] heeroluva at Livejournal to do away with subject line in comments
FYI I did not translate this (found it on an anon comm), but I ran the original through Google translate and it's correct.

[livejournal.com profile] igrick, dude in charge of lj design, has posted the following today:

New LJ. Step one: comments.

Folks, as the first step of a major design change me and Tyoma (lj user tema) were talking about we've rolled out the new comments system onto the beta-testing servers. I wanted to say "rolled out the new design" but it's really is a completely new system, not a simple design change. It's only available to beta-users for now (you can become one by joining the[info] lj_ru_beta community and enabling beta-mode here) and to journals that have default commenting design enabled (like mine does).

Better see once than read this text a hundred times, but I'm going to talk about my impressions and major changes anyway.

- new comments can be added without page reload;
- comments could be posted by pressing ctrl+enter shortcut - this is genius;
- comments no longer have Subject field and this is non-negotiable;
- mass comment actions are made simpler: you only need to select one comment and you'll see the actions panel (we'll add more options later);
- marking new comments option - the juiciest part for people who get many of them. It's very simple: adds "new" mark to comments that were added since you've last visited the page. I've got a new habit because of it: I open the comments page, mark the first comment, select "mark all" and "collapse all" and then scroll down looking for new comments which I then expand and reply to. That means that all new comments get replies in one go without page being refreshed. Then I refresh the page and repeat the process. It's much more useful for me than email because I get a lot of comments.

Big pic (in Russian) under cut, but it gives the basic idea )

- Because of the new method of selecting userpics I've started using them more.
- It's much easier to add a link, a picture or a video into a comment (we'll add selecting/adding to and from the ScrapBook).
- All actions are now animated and that looks much nicer.

And many other nice things. Anyway, if you're interested - try out the beta-mode, discuss, criticize, suggest.

My thoughts:
So I'm definitely not thrilled with this. The whole removal of subject lines will totally mess up kink/comment memes/comms. I kind of foresee a mass migration to Dreamwidth.

Going through the comments people don't seem happy. In one reply [livejournal.com profile] igrick says that less than 1% of commenters use the subject line, the person resorts by asking for backing for that statistic and what about the communities that rely heavily on the use of subjects, and then igrick says I already gave you the statistic... Also is seems like this will affect ALL PREVIOUS COMMENTS not just new ones. Taking a moment to consider email notifications, if you're following a post with a lot of comments that would have previously been separated by subject, there will now be no way to differentiate them in emails because of the lack of a subject line.

It seems like the site is being pushed to be like facebook. If I wanted to use facebook I'd be there... seeing as this isn't facebook I don't want it to work like it. Comments also say that with this system the page loads slower than refreshing upon the addition of a comment (as if LJ wasn't slow enough already). The addition of animations and transitions will not make this browser friendly and will significantly hinder people with slower computers... As someone that normally has dozens of LJ tabs open at a time and a browser that uses too much memory as it is, this does not seem like a good thing.

Oh look and we have some English comments popping up that show how much igrick doesn't care:
Commenter: It is absolutely unacceptable to remove subject lines. You can say goodbye to fandom if you implement that.
igrick: Is it just a copy-past from some other place, or your thoughts?

Commenter: Why are subject lines being removed? Please explain.
igrick: Just because of 99% of comments have no subject and displayed as "no subject" in threads. It is not make sense to have a subject for comment.

Do the 99% that don't use subjects really care? Does it offend them in some way? Does it inconvenience them to see it? So the 1% don't matter? The hundreds of communities that have hundreds of thousands of posts where subject lines are immensely important don't matter? Yes, this is most likely to effect fandom communities, but if a mass exodus of fandom communities happens, the individuals are likely to follow. If this is implemented (without the option to opt out) it will not be a good thing for LJ's fannish userbase.

Can we please stop fixing stuff that's not broken?

ETA: So it seems since shit has hit the proverbial fan on igrick's journal, he added: "By the way — for the moment, and nearest half a year or even a year, we talking only about S1 commenting page. Journal, where comments are in design of journal, still will have subject lines both in commenting form and threads." Then someone asks "Does it mean that after that 'half a year or even a year' the same changes will come to journal designs as well?" and he replies "I can't tell definitely now, but probably yes. As well as probably now. It depends on many things, especially on how S2, as system to design journal, will be developed." So this won't affect the majority in the near future but still...

Also if you're going to post on his journal, he can't see subjects.

Podfic Collab :P

I had my first exam this morning! 8am on a Saturday morning, awesome. *sarcasm* And now I'm in the lab procrastinating on working on late labs. /o\

But enough about school! I want to talk about podfic, because apparently that's all I do anymore.

So, it's getting close to Christmas and my family has started to bug me about what I want. I'm not an easy person to buy for because there's not a lot that I want and when I do want something I generally just buy it myself. Really, what I want most for Christmas is podfic and it's not like I can ask my family for that.

But then I thought, why not? My dad used to read to me a lot when I was a kid and he's good at it. I would just have to find an appropriate (read: gen) fic and I could ask him to podfic it for me! When I mentioned this on twitter I got equal amounts of revulsion as my friends imagined their family reading them podfic and impressed kudos that I'm just that dedicated to podfic. :P

Last weekend when my mom bugged me again about what I wanted, I broached the subject with her. She kinda laughed at me but it sounded like she thought it was a good idea. Then on Thursday (after a panicked series of phone calls trying to ascertain my family members who attend Virginia Tech were ok) she asked me what Dad had said when I asked him to podfic for me.

I was kinda hoping she'd handle that side of things. :S And when I mentioned it, she said, no, I'd have to ask him myself. She then called Dad over to put him on the phone but I told her no because it's something I'd rather do in person.

I guess she mentioned it to him anyway though, because when I mentioned it to my dad yesterday he was all, "yeah sure." \o/ \o/ \o/

But then he asked me if it was my story, and how long it was through the ensuing conversation it became really clear he had no idea what he'd agreed to. When I said my mom mentioned the idea to him, I think it really was just a mention. Like, "Hey, Lindsay wants you to read her a story" which my dad misheard as "Lindsay wants you to read her story" which he interpreted as "Lindsay wants you to proofread a story she wrote."

Yeah, not quite.

When I properly explained what it was I wanted him to do he was a lot more hesitant so it may or may not happen. I think I might have to choose a different fic than the one I currently have in mind. I had wanted a Terminator gen fic (which I think my dad would actually enjoy reading) but it's almost 61K. Although the story is told from 3 POVs, so maybe if I break it down and only give him one POV and take the others it won't be as bad (she doesn't know this yet, but I want to ask [personal profile] nickelmountain if she'd be willing to take on one of the POVs if this happens, that way there can be a different voice for each POV). But I really really want this to happen. XD

Podfic Cons!

Podfic as a fan art is still relatively small, even if it's growing quickly. There are positive steps that can be taken to help podfic as a fan art grow. To learn how check out [community profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

Today is the last day of [community profile] pod_aware and the theme is encouraging podfic. Know what I think would be awesome for encouraging podfic? PODFIC CONS!!!

Back in August, the amazing [personal profile] general_jinjur posted a poll about a European podfic con (if you're interested in going to European con and haven't already done so, you should go fill out [personal profile] general_jinjur's poll and let her know!) but now I'd like to talk about a North American con. First, a poll:

The vision I have of the con right now is a smaller affair. I'm imagining 3 rooms, one for panels, one for hanging out and one for group podfic recordings (think how much easier it would be to collaborate with everyone in the same room! When you can have a full cast!) and other fun stuff like that.

I'm thinking about doing it in May since university students should be out of school at that time but it's before the summer rush of vacations happen (also, last I heard the Euro con is aiming for the end of summer and I don't want to overlap so people can go to both if they want to/can).

So what do people think? What would you like to see at a podfic con? What kinds of events, panels, parties? Would you be willing to volunteer to help out (tentatively, I'm not going to hold anyone to this if they say yes)?

Would you be interested in getting more information if I move forward with this?

(Also posted on LJ)

ETA #1: I've gotten a couple comments so far that May isn't that great of a month for people. Keeping in mind that there's no one time that'll work work for everyone, feel free to suggest when a better time for you would be.

AI8 RPF Podfic: Baby There's No Other Superstar

Fic: Baby, There's No Other Superstar by [livejournal.com profile] yekoc
Reader: [personal profile] paraka
Fandom: American Idol S8 RPF
Pairing: Kris/Adam
Summary: "Are you actually joking around about this? Is this a joke to you? There are pictures of your dick in the National Enquirer!"
Length: 1:25:23

Download: MP3 (60 MBs) ||| M4B (74 MBs)

Notes: This was recorded for Day 6 of [community profile] pod_aware on repodding:
Repodding is when a podfic is made of a fic that has already been podficced. Podfic is awesome, therefore two podfics is even more awesome, right? Every podficcer brings something different to the table and it's fun to see how different podficcers approach the same thing. To find out more about repodding, check out [community profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

This was also made (mostly) in a single weekend in September, which I dubbed 3 Day Novel Podfic (based on the 3 Day Novel Contest where people are challenged to write a novel in 3 day, kinda like NaNo but on speed!)

The awesome cover was made by [livejournal.com profile] bessyboo, if you'd like to hear the story of how she made it, it's here.

It was also recorded for [community profile] pod_aware for the Accents day:
Every podficcer has an accent; sometimes that accent matches that of the canon character, sometimes it doesn't. Every accent is special and brings something to the podfic, it represents the podficcer and reminds us just how diverse fandom can be. Come celebrate accents and learn more about them in podfic at [community profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

Podfic Friending Meme!

Blanket permission is a way for fan artists to let other fans know their comfort with others playing with their works. It's particularly helpful to podficcers when authors give blanket permission for anyone to podfic their works without having to ask first. To find out more on blanket permission with regards to podfic check out [community profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

I thought it might be fun to have a podfic friending meme! Because, lets face it, podfic is totally its own fandom. I also have a secret plan to follow all the podficcers but am shy and awkward about it, so this'll give me an excuse. :D

So! If you'd like to make some more podfic friends (you don't have to be a podficcer!), fill out a comment, check out other people's comments and friend away!

I recognize that people are being fannish in different places these days so I've included a couple of the main ones. You don't have to fill out all the places, just fill out the ones you're active in. :)
