Podfic Meta

Hey, so today the first of my 3 [community profile] pod_together projects was posted.

On Accents and Podfic, written by me and read by [personal profile] anatsuno.

This was in response to the poll about accents posted to [community profile] amplificathon at the end of last month. I had originally started writing different meta for [personal profile] anatsuno but when this conversation happened, it sort of ate my brain and this is what I was able to get out.

It was a little hard for me to sit on it this long, since I kept wanting to talk about what I was saying in it when the conversation was still happening, but hopefully people will still find it useful.

I highly suggest listening to the reading of the meta, because it all sounds so much more intelligent in [personal profile] anatsuno's voice (it's also amusing to hear her say that she's a Canadian who understands French accents fairly easily :P)

Meta Rec

[personal profile] anatsuno has posted a rant about being inclusive to podfic. If you run anything fannish, I suggest reading it because I, personally, am getting tired of living in the fannish world she's describing. /o\

Pod Aware Day 2 Podcast

Blanket permission is a way for fan artists to let other fans know their comfort with others playing with their works. It's particularly helpful to podficcers when authors give blanket permission for anyone to podfic their works without having to ask first. To find out more on blanket permission with regards to podfic check out [community profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

An Open Letter to bjewelled

Wednesday [livejournal.com profile] bjewelled made the post Daily Meta: Audioficcing from a Writerly Perspective. This post is an open letter to her in response to it. It originally started out as a comment, then grew to about 50 comments. If anyone other than [livejournal.com profile] bjewelled reads this, you might want to read her post first, although I do heavily quote her post in my response.

Meta: Porny Podfic

Today is my last day of work for the year!!! 4 day long weekend coming up! :D To celebrate, how about some podfic meta/discussions?

During some of the meta discussions earlier this year we kind of skated around, but never actually discussed, the idea of podfic as a sexy hot thing. Podfic is a really intimate thing. You have someone whispering in your ear and, since this is fandom, sometimes those whispers are porny.

Part of the reason why some people are skeeved by podfic is because they find it too intimate to have someone read porn to them. Or they find podfic funny because they just can’t handle someone reading porn to them.

Other people find porn in podfic really hot. During last year’s Amplirecathon [personal profile] mific made an entire rec list of hot podfic.

So, I want to ask people, what is your opinion of porny podfic? Do you enjoy it? Does it bother you? Do you not care? Which podfics do you find sexy? Is there anyone in particular you find reads it well? If you’ve listened to my podfic, how do you think I handle it?

Or, do you have any funny stories regarding podfic and their sexy bits? I always laugh thinking about the tweet @Hllaa16 made about my podfic, Unstuck: "The time travelers wife kradam podfic just started playing at lunch with my parents and grandma at the two kris' and Adam threesome part O.o"

The Fannish Life of a Podficer

So, last week I got metafandomed for that post I made on why people listen to podfic. A conversation in the comments however got into ownership of podfic (how much control does the author vs. podficer have) and, well, it got me thinking. So I want to talk a little bit about what I've experienced as a podficer and my thoughts on it, and invite any other podficers to chime in. More under the cut )

Podfic Thoughts...

I want to take a moment to talk about podfic (are you guys surprised?). Obviously, I'm a little obsessed with it; I love it to pieces. I know it hasn't caught on for a lot of fandoms and it's not every one's thing and that's ok. I'm not going to try and make anyone like it who doesn't.

But, the thing is, I've stumbled across quite a few conversations lately (mostly on LJ and Twitter) where people have been talking about why they don't like podfic. And, again, if you don't like podfic, you don't like podfic, I'm not going to try and convince you otherwise. However one of the reasons I keep seeing cited for not liking podfic is that they can read the fic faster in their heads than the podficer reads out loud.

Which is totally true, however it misses the point of podfic, and that's what I want to talk about. Because, I can read the lyrics of a song much faster (and sometimes with greater understanding) than I can listen to the song. That doesn't mean I'm going to stop listening to music. While the lyrics of a song are really important, they're only one part of a whole.

And the story is a much larger percentage of the whole of a podfic than the lyrics are of a song but my point is that listening to a podfic is a different experience than just reading a fic. Or, at least, as a podficer I hope that my readers are getting more than that. Podfic isn't just a format shift, it's not just an accessibility issue. If it were, you could just use a screen reader and be done with it, it would certainly be a lot less work.

And I get that if you're just sitting there listening to podfic, as you would sit to read, it can seem slow. But I would suggest to people who feel that way, to maybe try listening to it in other ways before giving up on it. Instead of just sitting there, do something while listening. Like knitting, data entry (god, podfic saved my life when I did data entry full time), cooking, cleaning or exercising. One of the biggest appeals of podfic, to me personally, is that it allows me to consume fanfic at times when I can't read.

And, you know, some people appreciate that podfic is slower. I've seen more than one person comment (myself included) that when listening at a slower pace, they pick up the nuances of a story that they missed as they sped through the text.

I guess I just want people to realize that podfic isn't an alternative to fic, it's something very different from it. So yeah, don't feel obligated to like podfic just because you like fic, but please, don't compare the two like they're the same thing either.

Fandom's Unwritten Rules

Last night I got into this big discussion about the "rules" of fandom. I kind of want to meta about it, but know that I'm unlikely to be able to get all my thoughts down, so instead, I want to have a general discussion about the "rules" of fandom.

So, my questions to you dear flist:
-What rules in fandom do you like?
-Which ones do you think are stupid?
-Which ones do you just not understand?
-Which ones do you feel are necessary?
-Which ones do you feel have out grown their usefulness?
-Which ones aren't really followed anymore but you wish they still were?

And any other thoughts you may have about fandom rules. Everyone join in (my journal is always open to random passer byers too)!

Fic Rec Post #2 (Sept 1-7)

Judging by how long it took me to write up my first rec post I don't think I'm going to be able to go with posting recs for an entire month at once, but I'll try doing it by the week. So here's my recs for Sept 1-7, 2009.

Also I have decided that Millie will be my official Fic Rec Icon. *nods*

Stargate Atlantis Recs )

Merlin Recs )

If anyone has any comments or suggestions about my formating I'd be happy to hear them. :)

Fic Rec Post #1! (August 25-312009)

So, as promised here's my first rec post! I decided to do it retroactively, so here's for the last week of August. I did a big Merlin rec list not too long ago for [info - personal] keewick so there might be some repeats in here.

I should also note that one of my common ways of finding fics is through fic finding comms, so I kind of have lost my filter when it comes to spoiling fics. So if you don't like being spoiled for a fic, my recs might make you unhappy.

Because a lot of my fic comes in podfic form I've listed the title as a link to the fic but have added links in brackets beside with links to the podfic. I listen to everything as MP3s but I've included links to the M4B form as well for anyone interested in the podbook format.

Oh God, this took me all night and it was just a few days worth of fic! :S
