Well, I suppose I shall join in with everyone making "OMG EARTHQUAKE!" posts.

You can tell that I'm a product of social media because I updated Twitter while the earthquake was happening.

Apparently it was a 5.0 (original numbers put it at 5.5 but it's since been downgraded by the USGS) and there hasn't been much damage, although someone here at work said that a bridge collapsed.

The building that I work in isn't all that sound and you can feel people walking by your desk, let alone the trucks outside.

So most of us here sat around in confusion. I think I was one of the first to realize what it was (this isn't the first earthquake I've felt in Ottawa, the first time I had no idea what was going on, this time I clued in faster), although it sounds like one of the guys in my department was under his desk before most of knew what was going on. He feels dumb about it now, however he was really doing what you're supposed to.

We have a visitor from our US office right now and when it started he just started asking "What is that? What's going on!?" and I said it was an earthquake, and he thought I was joking and just kept asking "What's going on!?" Turns out it was his first earthquake and he just couldn't believe that he was in one (in Ottawa of all places).

My work had us all evacuate and stand around for about half an hour outside. The Health Canada building next door looks like they're sending everyone home. Cell phones were down for quite a while, probably because there was too much volume. Some of the windows of our building have been damaged and I guess parts of Ottawa lost power.

There's a video of what appears to be an NDP press conference. I find it kind of hilarious how the NDPer just looks kind of confused and tries to straighten his papers meanwhile the media people are making a run for the door.

ETA: OMG, there are T-shirts already. Designed for Toronto because, you know, they felt it the most *rolls eyes*

Weird Podfic Experience, Vacation and Protests!

I just has the really weird experience of talking to someone on the phone for work and realizing halfway through the conversation that they sounded a lot like a podficer I sometimes listen to. I don't think they are actually the podficcer (according to the podficer's profile they live in a different country) but still, very weird, and distracting.

Also, thank you so much to everyone that responded to my question about traffic and NYC. I'm still working my way through comments that I need to respond to. At [info - personal] lilithilien's suggestion I managed to find a place that would sell me plane tickets without giving my passport, so the good news is I'm definitely flying down. The bad news is I'm flying US Airways and it's going to be about $100 more (once you include the baggage charges [and it seems so wrong that they charge for even your first bag]).

And in other random news, I went to my first protest last night. It was a protest outside a local organization's monthly meeting and when they got wind of it, they canceled the meeting out of fear for their safety. Which was kind of ridiculous since we were anything but a threatening group. I think all but 3 of us were actually members of the organization in question, mostly we wanted answers to questions the executive of the organization kept avoiding. It seemed especially ridiculous since on the drive down there, we had to pass the RBC which had been fire bombed that morning.

Any Senators Fans on my Flist?

So, are there any Ottawa Senators fans on my flist?

I'm asking because my place of work recently started taking part in a program with Scotia Bank Place where they send us special offers on events occurring there. I don't know how awesome the discount is but if there's anyone out there who's thinking of going to a game I'd be happy to let you know the details and let you buy through my work for you.

Disclaimer: I don't, nor do I think anyone at my work, get anything out of this, it's not a fund raiser or anything so I'm not actually trying to sell anything.
