#ITPE 2017

OMG, I can't believe it's ITPE time again. Anyway, hello lovely podficcer!

I'm listing a lot of fandoms this year bc I've been slowly breaking up with Marvel for, like, 2+ years now and haven't found a replacement fandom, I just keep trying all the fandoms to see if one will stick. Here's what I've been into lately, in no particular order.

X-Men (First Class movie 'verse): My main pairing is Charles/Erik, though X-Men Apocalypse made me yearn for Charles/Erik/Raven. I specified First Class, not because it has to be based off that single movie, but because I don't actually enjoy rivals pairings normally, so the early 2000s Charles/Erik is less interesting to me, than the closer relationship we've seen in First Class/Days of Future Past/Apocalypse. I'm not opposed to stories that are set in the earlier (later, in canon) movies, just it's a bit more hit or miss how their relationship is portrayed. My favourite tag in the fandom is Alternate Universe - Still Have Powers because I love stories that explore how the world would react to mutants and the powers that they have but the actual canon is so intense, goes to such an extreme. These AUs generally have more of a middle ground.

Marvel Netflix (without a focus on Frank or Danny): Daredevil is the netflix show I've been the most fannish about in the past. Ugh, my stupid avocados, and the awesome women! I'm not really a Frank Castle fan though and the only spark of interest I felt around him was his relationship to Karen.

Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are also awesome, though I haven't delved into those fandoms as deeply. Iron Fist... well, I mostly don't understand why they felt the need to make that show. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it like the others. I won't object if you do a Defenders podfic that has Danny present, but I'm not going to enjoy a Danny-centric story.

Marvel comics 616: I'm mostly interested in Steve/Tony centric stories from comics, though Jan is my fav Avenger, so anything with her in it is amazing! I also have some recs on AO3.

MCU: My main pairings from MCU are Steve/Tony, Clint/Coulson, Clint/Coulson/Natasha, occasionally Tony/Bucky or Steve/Tony/Buck that isn't centered on Steve.
For Steve/Tony, I prefer the stories that build off the comics canon for their relationship (because I admit they are not the strongest pairing within the movie canon). I cannot deal with Civil War stories (from the movie 'verse, 616 is a different matter). My Steve/Tony MCU recs (these are pretty sparse)

For Clint/Coulson and Clint/Coulson/Natasha it's all about the competency porn for me. I love Strike Team Delta, I love them watching out for each other, I love them supporting each other, and I love them kicking ass together. My Clint/Coulson recs

Iron Man: Armored Adventures and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
I've watched and love both of these cartoons, and would happily receive gifts from either of these shows. EMH has the same pairings as the rest of my Marvel preferences, but also includes Clint/Hulk. AA I ship basically Tony/Anyone. :P

Moving out of Marvel...
My main pairing for this fandom is Kala/Wolfgang, though I love all the canon pairings (including Sun/Mun and Capheus/Zakia).

Beauty and the Beast (2017)
God I really wanted to throw myself into this fandom after I saw the movie, unfortunately the fandom is not that large. ;__; I ship Belle/Adam and have no interest in seeing Gaston redeemed, nor am I into Lefou pining after him (it's fine if it's present in the story like it was in canon, but I don't want Lefou pining to be the main point of the story)

Star Trek AOS
I blame [ profile] Rjcreighton for this one. I've pretty much just done Kirk/Spock in this fandom. I have a few recs on AO3 but they're mostly really long stories so probably not useful here.

Merlin/Arthur is my main pairing, but I'm also 100% there for canon-era slice-of-life gen, or stories of how awesome a queen Gwen was, post-show. Canon-era stories tend to be my fav, however I'm fine with AUs that take place in a different time so long as there's still magic (there are non-magical AUs that I like, but they can be more hit and miss for me, if you find a modern day non-magic AU that seems to really align with the likes I have listed below though, go for it). I tended to enjoy the potential of season 1 more than the reality of the later seasons, I'm totally there for redeemable Morgana. I have a bunch of (old) recs on my pinboard.

The Martian
Oh Mark Watney you poor goober, look what Mars has done to you. I primarily read gen in this fandom and enjoy Mark trying to cope while everything goes wrong. I'm also ok in reading pairing fic in this fandom but don't have any particular ships, the fandom skews to Mark/Beck, which I'm fine with but don't feel any great love for either. If you go the way of shipping I'd probably prefer something where it's either background or actually puts some work into making me get behind the pairing.

I fell in love with the franchise through Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and I adore Cameron. I also have a thing for people growing into heroes so love John Connor's characterization from SCC and T3. My ships are John/Cameron and John/Kate, though this fandom is the one I read the most gen in. I also adore crossovers with Terminator. If you can find good crossovers with this and any of the other fandoms I've listed, that would totally make my day. My Terminator recs are on my pinboard.

Things that I love (an incomplete list): Rule 63, identity porn, competence porn, trans characters, world exploration, found family, pretend dating (really, most harlequin-type storylines), angst, AUs, origin stories, power dynamics (including D/s and BDSM), emotional punches in the gut, and way more than I can think of at the moment.

I don't have many no go zones but cannibalism and killing people in a fetishized way are really hard stops for me. Related to the previous point, I mostly can't deal with zombies and am finding vampires harder to deal with too. Detailed gore on a large scale also makes me queasy and I'm not a fan of horror.

I don't enjoy stories whose plots are driven by homophobia.

As mentioned above, I'm mostly pretending that Captain America: Civil War never happened and tend to immediately back button out of anything that deals with it.

Note: Since these are things other people usually list as no gos, while I wouldn't necessarily say these as things I love, I don't mind unhappy endings and/or death fic. Related to my like of emotional punches in a gut, I like when a story can make me cry. I don't mind sad events or endings so long as the emotions ring true. So if you have a story that you think would work that has an unhappy ending or character death, go for it! I am well known as an angst muffin after all.

Podfic Mail

While on a quest for an awesome iPhone case, I ended up deciding to just design my own through one of those made to order sites. And, since I'm the biggest sucker for the whole "might as well make the shipping worth while" mentality, I ended up searching through their other products. They mostly cater to small businesses and make business cards, letterheads, promo swag, etc and I somehow found myself designing a podfic header and getting cards made.

So, if you would like to get a podfic card from me, leave me your address in an (screened) comment, or email it to me at parakaproductions at gmail dot com. I'll mail internationally. :)

So, as many people know, I run the twitter account [ profile] podfic and the last week there were some questions and discussions about how I run the account. So, for anyone interested, I thought I'd shed some light on how I find the tweets I RT, and how I decide which ones get to be RTed.

Typhoon Haiyan Fundraiser

As most of you have probably become aware, the Philippines has been devastated by the fiercest typhoon ever recorded, with over ten thousand people already feared to have perished. [ profile] fandomaid is holding a Buy It Now fundraiser to help out. This isn't an auction, it's a place where creators can name their price and donators can buy them on a first come, first serve basis.

Here's my thread where I'm offering Avengers or Fall Out Boy podfic. It's $2/1000 words, up to a total of 30K. So far 12,500 words have been bought.

I've also compiled a list of podfic-related offers over on amplificathon.

Kink Bingo

So, I've been wanting an excuse to record more sexy podfic and thought [community profile] kink_bingo would be a good excuse.

Card )

We'll see how this goes. It's kind of overwhelming to think about finding stories to record for all/some of these. If anyone wants to suggest bandom or AI fics that fit the prompt, I'd be interested. :)

Rhea314 Podfics

So, I used [community profile] welovepodfic as an excuse to finally tell [ profile] rhea314 how much I love her podfic. And now I'm posting it here, so I can tell you guys too.

AO3 hits meme

So [personal profile] greedy_dancer posted (locked) about it being 1 year since the AO3 hit meme went around last year and I just remembered I did it too. So I thought I'd copy her and revisit my stats. Because I enjoy stats.

Pod Aware Day 1! How We Podfic

There are so many ways to create podfic and so many ways to listen. We might engage with podfic curled up in bed, in our closet, while commuting or at the gym, in our bathroom with makeshift soundproofing. To find out more information on podfic and how we podfic, check out Pod Aware on DW, LJ or Tumblr.

I've been so crazy busy between school and running [community profile] pod_aware that I haven't properly had time to make things for it, so I'm going to use this as an excuse to make a post I've been meaning to for a long time now. I know I've talked about my home made recording studio a lot, but now I'm going to do a proper post.

So Many Podfic Things Happening!

I'm kind of going insane with the amount of work I have between school and fandom, but I've still signed up for a bunch of podfic things.

October is Repod Month this year!
Come post your repods over at [community profile] multipodicity

Help spread the word on podfic (you don't need to be a podficcer to join in!).
[community profile] pod_aware || [community profile] pod_aware)

Pod Aware is a week to talk about and spread the word about podfic.

If you're on Twitter, there's the #InformalTwitterPodficExchange (or #ITPE because it's shorter) happening. It's multifandom and is a really low pressure holiday gift exchange, there's no minimums or maximums. The rules posts are here, here, here, here, here, and here. Sign ups close on Friday.

podbang promo image

Podbang opened for sign ups today. It's a gift exchange to create big bang length podfics (minimum word count of 30K), with projects going live February 14, 2013.

Podfic Entries on Fanlore

There's currently a discussion post going on at [community profile] fanlore about how podfic entries should be made. I'd really appreciate hearing more opinions from podficcers on the matter.

A little background on the situation )

Sep. 8th, 2012

Respecting Author's wishes.

As some of you know, I'm currently hosting a copy of the Google streaming code for podficcers to use. It's been whitelisted over at AO3 so we could get [community profile] pod_together up and running this year and AO3 made an announcement letting people know this and that I'm open to others using the player too if they want.

This week, someone calling themselves nnyrt (zie doesn't seem to have an account at AO3, and I can't find zir on the web by Googling) started leaving comments to that post. In one of the comments about the Google TOS, zie started to attack me, personally, making it clear zie has some kind of personal grudge and/or problem with me.

The statement made was:
"Google Inc. may lack a persona in fandom to sympathize with, unlike londondrowning or ariestess, who were hurt in the past by Paraka's disregard for their derivs statements. But there is nothing transformative about outright theft, especially of something for which use had been served at no charge. It's just tacky."

I would like to make it clear that I do respect authors and I respect when they say yes or no to podfic.

The situation with [ profile] londondrowning was a complex one that involved miscommuniation because of a 3rd party. I cleared things up with her right away, took down my podfic and, as far as I know, we're on good term and she was happy with the outcome of our situation.

As far as I know, I've never podficced anything by [ profile] ariestess and I would, of course, respect her say so, should I ever ask and she say no.

Streaming on AO3

I've been working with AO3 a lot lately, trying to get everything going for [community profile] pod_together set. Namely, I needed to work with them with regards to streaming podfic on AO3.

Last year when I spoke to them about it, they added Google to their whitelist so we could use the Google Reader player to stream our podfics. Earlier this year though, Google started changing things around and the player basically stopped working. [personal profile] argentumlupine found a solution that involved uploading a copy of the player to other hosting and using that.

That's a problem on AO3 though, because they have to whitelist any sites hosting the player before it'll work over there. To get around that, they announced in their July 31, 2012 newsletter that they'd host their own copy of the player and gave out code that would eventually start working once they committed the code.

As the posting dates for [community profile] pod_together drew nearer, I started to panic. When I contacted AO3 again, they said they were being held up by Legal, because they thought hosting their own player might be against Google's TOS so they didn't want to go through with that option and if they did it would be very temporary while they figured out another option.

I've been hosting the code for anyone to use on I said I'd be willing to take on the liability of hosting the player if they didn't want to and they agreed to whitelist my site so we could use it for [community profile] pod_together (and so others can use it).

However, it looks like when they put my solution through, they also made the AO3 hosted solution work too. I saw some of my friends changing their streaming to the AO3 hosted solution, and worrying that they'd have to change things all over again later, I tried to warn people not to and today I emailed AO3 to find out what was going on.

I was told that, indeed, it was a mistake that the AO3 hosted solution was active and they've since deactivated it. So, if you fixed your streaming links using the AO3 hosted player, your streams are broken again. /o\

If you want to use my streaming code, it can be found here.

Podfic Meta

Hey, so today the first of my 3 [community profile] pod_together projects was posted.

On Accents and Podfic, written by me and read by [personal profile] anatsuno.

This was in response to the poll about accents posted to [community profile] amplificathon at the end of last month. I had originally started writing different meta for [personal profile] anatsuno but when this conversation happened, it sort of ate my brain and this is what I was able to get out.

It was a little hard for me to sit on it this long, since I kept wanting to talk about what I was saying in it when the conversation was still happening, but hopefully people will still find it useful.

I highly suggest listening to the reading of the meta, because it all sounds so much more intelligent in [personal profile] anatsuno's voice (it's also amusing to hear her say that she's a Canadian who understands French accents fairly easily :P)

[personal profile] anatsuno has posted a rant about being inclusive to podfic. If you run anything fannish, I suggest reading it because I, personally, am getting tired of living in the fannish world she's describing. /o\

I can't believe the friends I have

Thursday started off as any normal day. I was just sitting at my desk at work, poking at what I'd have to do for the day, when I checked my personal email. The first thing I noticed was that [personal profile] fire_juggler posted to [community profile] amplificathon. Then I noticed that she'd sent me a DM, which I checked first. It said

Happy 5-Year Anniversary! Had we known that you would switch fandoms 2 weeks before, we might have chosen differently. But regardless, know that we love you lots and lots, and maybe you can have one last fling with AI before you go. *glomps*

And after reading it (while, actually), I promptly burst into tears. This was kind of awkward and two coworkers had just walked over and they looked kind of alarmed. It actually took me about half an hour to stop crying that morning. I kept working, which I think just made things weirder for my coworkers, as we discussed rebates and filing as I cried. :P

I just, I can't, I honestly don't even know what to say, you guys. I've been trying to write this thank you post for days now and I still am pretty speechless over the whole thing. No one's ever done something like this before. That I have so many friends that were willing to come together and make this for me (and a few others who tried or would have had they known about it) is just so amazing to me.

This is seriously the most amazing thing that ever has happened to me in fandom (and fandom is pretty amazing, so that's saying something). I haven't the preoper words to express how I feel, god.

I haven't finished listening to all my podfic yet, but so far everything has been wonderful and amazing and I love it all.

So, in conclusion, thank you so, so much to [personal profile] fire_juggler for organizing all of this, and to everyone else who contributed:
[ profile] applegeuse, [personal profile] argentumlupine, [personal profile] bessyboo, [personal profile] crazybutsound, [personal profile] croissantkatie, [personal profile] dapatty, [personal profile] exmanhater, [personal profile] fire_juggler (again), [personal profile] fishpatrol, [personal profile] greedy_dancer, [personal profile] heard_the_owl, [personal profile] inkjunket, [personal profile] isweedan, [personal profile] letsgofriday, [personal profile] lunate8, [personal profile] klb, [personal profile] reena_jenkins, [personal profile] revolutionaryjo, [personal profile] sly_hostetter, [personal profile] takola and [personal profile] via_ostiense

Also to [personal profile] bessyboo for the cover, now all of fandom can see that ridiculous picture or me. :P
